This explains why the sky is blue. Shorter wavelengths (such as the color blue) bend easier, so are scattered easier by particles floating in the atmosphere. Thus, blue light gets scattered and gives that blue appearance to the sky. Conversely, the sun looks more yellow-red straight on during a sunset because all the blue-light has been scattered away. This has also been called the Tyndall effect, after named scientist showed blue light scatters more when passing through fluids with finely suspended particles.
