What was the purpose of the AREDS study?

The Age-Related Eye Disease study’s purpose was to:
1. Measure the incidence of age-related cataracts and macular degeneration
2. Look for risk factors for these diseases
3. See if antioxidants or zinc supplements can reduce the progression of either of these.

The main things they found were that vitamin supplements helped in patients with intermediate or advanced dry ARMD. Also, you should avoid beta-carotene in patients who smoke because of an increased incidence of lung cancer.
