What causes diffuse lamellar keratitis?

DLK is a non-infectious process that can occur in the flap-stroma interface after LASIK. While not entirely understood, it’s believed to be from debris in the interface … such as blood, meibomian oils, microkeratome oils, dust, etc.. It usually responds to topical steroids but may require irrigation. This is also called “sands of the Sahara syndrome.”
